Professor Emeritus Dr. Hans-Georg Ebert was Professor of Islamic Law at the Oriental Institute from 1998 until his retirement in September 2019.  He has been a member of the board of the “Society for Arabic and Islamic Law e.V.” since its founding in 1997.  He was editor of the series “Leipzig Contributions to Oriental Studies”. Since 2017 he has been co-editor of the work Bergmann/Ferid/Henrich “International Marriage and Childhood Law with Nationality Law”, Berlin.  He researches in the areas of Islamic law, law of Arab countries, Islamic state and legal concepts and Islamic studies.  He is the author of numerous publications on Islamic law and the law of Arab countries.

Jürgen Wasim Frembgen (* 1955) is a German ethnologist, Islamic scholar and writer.
His work focuses on Islamic religious and cultural history, especially Islamic mysticism
(Sufism), the cultures of Pakistan as well as Iran and India.

Birgitt Hoffmann, a prominent Iranologist and Islamologist, was born in Germany. She received her PhD in Islamic History from the University of Freiburg, and the title of her postdoctoral thesis was "A Study of Rashid al-Din's Valuable Services in the Rabe Rashid of Tabriz during the Ilkhanate", which she presented in 2001. From 1985 to 1989, Hoffmann was research assistant at the Institute for Iranian Studies at the Free University of Berlin, and from 1989 to 1995, research assistant at the Chair for Iranian Studies at Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg. She was also a professor of Islamic and Arabic Studies at the University of Würzburg and has been professor of Iranian Studies at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg. From 2003 to 2007, she was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Iranian Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 2007 has been the Chairwoman of the Scientific Advisory board of the Center for Asian Studies and Social Anthropology of this Academy. Hoffman has conducted research on Ilkhanate history and culture, Rashid al-Din Fazl Allah Hamadani, residents and visitors to the Maragheh Observatory, and the throne ceremony of Mongolian princes, and her research has been published in the form of articles

Jens Scheiner is a W3 professor of Islamic studies with a focus on the political, cultural and religious history of the Middle East from late antiquity to the post-classical period (600 to 1500).

In addition, he researches Hadit literature, which includes the sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad, and specializes in the Isnad-cum-Matn analysis according to Harald Motzki.

In the non-university sector, Jens Scheiner is involved in, among other things, teacher training, school projects and offers intercultural skills training.

Jens Scheiner regularly offers events on the Koran, Muhammad, the early Islamic empire, the Hadith, Islamic culture and the portrayal of Muslims in feature films. Theses and research papers from these areas are very welcome.
